Poolside Deck Restoration Included: Mould Treatment, Sanding, Oiling & Pool Area Clean With all the rain we’ve had, it’s easy for a deck to get away from you. This poolside deck had reached that point: covered in surface mould, algae and lichen, and heading towards being beyond saving. Thankfully, the damage was only on the surface. I sanded the boards back and they came up beautifully. Then I did a thorough mould treatment to kill the spores, not just remove what you could see. To finish, I applied a penetrating decking oil with added mould inhibitors to help stop it coming back. While I was there, I also cleaned up the whole pool area, including the tiles and glass, so the entire space was ready to enjoy again. I filmed this job from start to finish, with a time-lapse of the sanding, washing and oiling. It’s one of my favourite transformations because it shows what’s possible, even with a deck in this condition. If you’re wondering whether your deck can be saved, this is a great one to compare it to. Keeping it looking new: Because this deck is so exposed to the weather, I recommend an annual recoat of oil.
